From fantasy to function: Key considerations for building enterprise-ready AI agents

Everywhere we turn, AI agents are being talked about as game-changers, like they're just one prompt away from automating entire workflows or departments. The idea is tempting: autonomous tools that can handle anything you throw at them with no constraints or guardrails. But the reality is that's not how the world works, especially in regulated industries like finance, government, and healthcare, where reliability is non-negotiable.

Even a 1% error rate in an enterprise context can be disastrous. If it's optimising food delivery routes, that means one out of every hundred orders ends up at the wrong address, or in government, that could mean one in a hundred applicants being incorrectly denied a critical service. That kind of failure rate is costly, risky and hard to explain to a customer or regulator.

But how do you build AI agents that actually ship, run and help reliably and at scale? It starts with understanding which problems agentic systems can solve, how enterprise agents should behave, and what is required to make them predictable and safe at scale. Here are three considerations to guide the way.

Open-world agents aren't built for enterprise reality

Much of the hype around agents stems from open-world AI agents that can operate on any situation, adapt on the spot, and operate with incomplete and ambiguous information. But while exciting in theory, these agents are unpredictable by design, and unpredictability isn't scalable in an enterprise context. 

Open-world problems are defined by what we don't know. So, open-world agents face two critical limitations. First, they have no fixed boundaries, which means they encounter situations they have not seen before. Second, tasks and context shift constantly, which means the agent has to adapt on the spot, with no guarantee it has the context needed. Therefore, in open-world scenarios, the amount of possible context and the number of data dependencies an agent may need to consider is exponentially greater. As the potential context expands, it becomes far more difficult to ensure the agent has the right information, is interpreting it correctly, or is making decisions grounded in the full picture. 

Luckily, most enterprise use cases fall into the opposite category. They're closed-world: the scope is clear, the data is known, and the rules are fixed. In these systems, the size of the context required is limited, and the data ecosystem is well-understood, which dramatically narrows the problem space and ensures the agent has complete, high-quality context. From invoice reconciliation, contract validation, to claims routing and inventory forecasting, these are structured, repeatable processes that current AI models can reliably tackle.

By focusing on these predictable, well-bounded problems, organisations can build AI agents that are testable, trackable, and safer to deploy.

What enterprise agents actually look like

Most people imagine agents as conversational interfaces, but that is not how they work best in an enterprise. The most valuable agents are autonomous, long-running processes that react to data as it flows through the business. They make decisions, call services and produce outputs without needing to be told where to start.

Picture an agent that monitors incoming invoices. When a new one lands, it pulls the data, validates it against open purchase orders, flags any discrepancies, and either routes it for approval or rejection. All automatically, with no human manual needed.

The best enterprise agents follow a consistent pattern:

  • They're event-driven, triggered by changes in the system, not user prompts.
  • They're autonomous, acting without human initiation.
  • They're continuous. They don't spin up for a single task and disappear.
  • They're mostly asynchronous, working in the background, not in blocking workflows.

Successful enterprise agents are built by wiring together models, tools and logic. Rather than chasing the dream of artificial general intelligence (AGI), scalable, reliable AI is about decomposing real problems into smaller steps, then assembling specialised components that can handle them autonomously and predictably.

Reliability comes from determinism and testing 

LLMs are probabilistic by design. They can produce different outputs based on the same input, which becomes a problem when decisions need to be auditable and repeatable.

The answer is to contain that unpredictability. Wrap non-deterministic models in deterministic processes, and define every step explicitly when you can. Don't overcomplicate agent logic by letting the LLM decide what to do next or which tool should be used when the steps are known ahead of time. Event-driven, multi-agent architectures can also help by breaking workflows into smaller, traceable steps, giving added clarity and control. 

Testing is just as important. Each agent should be evaluated independently, with its inputs and outputs mocked and replayed, and its performance evaluated in isolation. 

Ultimately, effective enterprise AI is about combining the flexibility of LLMs with the structure of good software engineering. If something can be made deterministic, make it deterministic. Save the model for the parts that actually require judgment. That's how you build agents that don't just look good in demos but actually operate reliably at scale.

Build the right foundation

The future of AI in the enterprise doesn't start with AGI, it starts with automation that works. That means focusing on closed-world problems that are structured, bounded and rich with opportunity for real impact. These use cases don't require new models or research breakthroughs, just smart, practical architecture, wired together in ways that are deterministic, testable and observable. 

The organisations that embrace this approach will develop agents they can trust, and deliver real value across the business.
