Google unveils three new subsea cables across the Americas

Google has announced three new subsea cable systems in the Americas, along with a new branch for the Firmina cable, under a network project called Americas Connect.
The new systems are Alisios, Canoa and OlaLuz. Together with the Firmina branch and earlier investments in Curie, Nuvem and Sol, they expand Google's network footprint across Latin America, the Caribbean and North America, with links onward to Europe.
Alisios will connect the Dominican Republic, Panama and Chile. Canoa will connect the Dominican Republic and Bermuda. OlaLuz will link the Dominican Republic directly to Florida, while the Firmina branch will add a new landing in the Dominican Republic.
The layout is designed around geographically separate routes and cloud regions. In the Pacific, Google plans a subsea ring linking Chile to Panama, with a third connection from Panama to the US West Coast and access to cloud regions in Chile, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
In the Caribbean, the Panama-to-Dominican Republic section of Alisios will connect with a ring between the Dominican Republic and the US East Coast. That route will tie into cloud regions in South Carolina and Virginia.
Across the Atlantic, Canoa will connect with the Nuvem and Sol cables. The result will be cable rings to both the United States and Europe, linking to Google's US East Coast regions and to Madrid.
The announcement highlights the Dominican Republic's growing role as a landing point in regional digital infrastructure. The country features in all three new systems, as well as in the new Firmina branch.
That prominence drew support from President Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona of the Dominican Republic.

Panama is also central to the plan, serving as a connection point between Pacific and Caribbean routes. President José Raúl Mulino linked the cable investment to the country's broader digital policy.

The announcement of the new subsea cables marks a transformative milestone and aligns with Panama's Digital Hub Initiative and the digital infrastructure pillar of the National Digital Strategy. It fosters opportunities for both our country and the region, propelling us into a new era of secure and competitive global integration. Regional links
Bermuda will gain a direct subsea connection to the Dominican Republic through Canoa. The link adds to the island's existing role in Atlantic cable infrastructure following the landings of Nuvem and Sol.
"We are pleased to welcome Canoa as the first subsea cable system to connect Bermuda directly to the Dominican Republic. It follows the Nuvem and Sol landings, and the expansion of the Bermuda Digital Exchange Port announced in June 2026. The name carries a maritime heritage that moved people and goods across these waters long before any cable did. This connection creates new digital pathways and partnerships between Bermuda and the Caribbean Community, while strengthening resilience for Bermudian households and businesses. We are encouraged that global infrastructure leaders such as Google continue to choose Bermuda. This investment reflects growing confidence in our island as a trusted digital gateway and strategic landing point in the Atlantic," said Lightbourne.
Chile, the southern end of the Alisios system, is set to gain another route into the wider regional network. That should strengthen its position in trans-Pacific and inter-American connectivity while adding an alternative path through Panama and the Caribbean.
"The new Alisios submarine cable, which will connect Chile, Panama and the Dominican Republic, will be a strategic milestone, as it will strengthen our country's position as a digital leader in Latin America. Beyond this technological achievement, this infrastructure will translate into direct benefits for our citizens. Providing faster, more resilient and more secure connectivity would undoubtedly boost local businesses, foster economic growth and bring the opportunities of the global digital economy directly into the homes of millions of Chileans," said de Grange.
The names of the three cables draw on regional maritime and linguistic references. Alisios refers to the trade winds, Canoa comes from the Taíno word for canoe, and OlaLuz combines the Spanish words for wave and light.
The wider strategy reflects a push by large technology groups to secure more direct control over international network routes as demand continues to rise for cloud services, streaming, research traffic and cross-border data. By adding multiple paths across the Americas, the project increases route diversity between the Pacific, the Caribbean and the Atlantic, with direct links into several of Google's cloud regions.
Combined with Curie, Nuvem and Sol, the new build creates a broader mesh of cable systems rather than a single corridor. The structure is intended to improve reach, reliability and resilience across the region.
