CTERA links Microsoft Copilot to enterprise file data

CTERA has added support for Microsoft Copilot, extending Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams Copilot to file data managed by CTERA.
The integration is aimed at organisations that store files across edge sites, data centres and cloud environments, rather than keeping all working data inside Microsoft 365 repositories such as SharePoint and OneDrive.
It lets employees retrieve source-cited answers from files they are already authorised to access, while data remains in its existing location and current permissions and governance policies stay in force.
That addresses a central concern for many large organisations as they expand access to generative AI tools: how to make more internal information available to assistants without moving sensitive files into new repositories or weakening access controls.
Microsoft 365 Copilot is typically used with content held in Microsoft's own applications and storage services. By linking Copilot to a wider pool of enterprise file data, CTERA is positioning itself as a bridge between established file estates and newer AI systems used by employees in day-to-day work.
According to CTERA, its platform connects Microsoft Copilot to enterprise file data through the Model Context Protocol and through content held in what it describes as a global file system. In practice, that means businesses can expose distributed unstructured data to Copilot while keeping it under existing administrative rules.
CTERA also uses search, classification and semantic enrichment to improve the relevance of Copilot responses. Unstructured data can be enriched with metadata, semantic context and classification so the AI system can identify more relevant documents and provide grounded answers with citations.
For enterprises, the quality of AI responses often depends less on the underlying model than on whether internal information can be found, interpreted and governed properly. File shares, archived project folders, research documents and operational records often sit outside the systems most visible to AI assistants, even though they contain key business knowledge.
CTERA framed the move as an alternative to copying large volumes of corporate content into a separate AI store. Instead, files can be indexed in place and queried without crossing governance boundaries.
Governance focus
This point is likely to matter to Chief Information Officers and compliance teams under pressure to support AI adoption while maintaining control over who can see what. Permission-aware responses have become a major requirement as companies try to avoid accidental oversharing of confidential or regulated information.
CTERA said every answer returned through the integration is generated only from content an individual user is authorised to access. That model mirrors the access controls already in place for enterprise file systems and is intended to reduce the risk of AI tools surfacing material to the wrong employee.
The integration is also delivered inside Copilot and Teams through single sign-on, avoiding the need for staff to adopt a separate application. That could matter for companies trying to increase use of AI assistants without adding another layer of software training and support.
The launch also builds on a broader strategy around the Model Context Protocol, an emerging method for linking AI systems to external tools and data sources. CTERA said it had already used that approach to make enterprise file data available to other AI agents, including Claude and Gemini.
That broader compatibility may appeal to organisations that do not want their internal data strategy tied to a single vendor's AI system. Many businesses are still testing several assistants and agent frameworks at once while trying to avoid repeated integration projects for each one.
Aron Brand, Chief Technology Officer at CTERA, said the product was developed in response to customer demand as organisations expanded Copilot access beyond specialist users.

The announcement highlights a wider shift in the enterprise software market, where vendors are increasingly focusing on the quality, structure and control of the data made available to AI assistants rather than only on the models themselves. For many organisations, the challenge is no longer simply deploying Copilot, but making sure it can reach the right information without creating new silos or undermining established governance rules.
CTERA said the integration enables organisations to connect enriched enterprise file data to Microsoft Copilot across hybrid environments without moving files or changing existing governance boundaries.
