Google named Gartner leader for cloud-native platforms

Google has been named a Leader in Gartner's 2026 Magic Quadrant for Cloud-Native Application Platforms, marking its third consecutive year in the Leaders quadrant.
The recognition focuses on Google Cloud's application platform strategy, spanning serverless services, containers, and tools for building and running AI agents alongside more conventional software workloads.
Google used the announcement to explain how it wants developers to move from early prototypes to production systems on the same platform. Its approach is intended to reduce infrastructure work and support both traditional applications and newer agent-based software.
At the prototyping stage, Google highlighted closer links between Google AI Studio and Cloud Run. According to the company, developers can build full-stack applications in AI Studio and publish them to Cloud Run with a single click.
Google also pointed to managed Model Context Protocol servers, including one for Cloud Run, as a way for AI agents to interact with cloud resources. Those tools are integrated with Identity and Access Management, VPC Service Controls, and Model Armour, it said.
Another part of the offering is an official skills repository for Google Cloud technologies. The repository includes packaged instructions and resources intended to help agents complete specialist multi-step tasks across services such as Cloud Run.
Build and design
Beyond early development, Google outlined tools aimed at platform engineering and software design. These include Antigravity, an internal development framework that brings multi-step AI reasoning into developer workflows and links local codebase work to its cloud-native platforms, according to the company.
Google also highlighted Application Design Centre, a service intended to reduce the need for manual Terraform and YAML configuration. It said the product lets teams visually design standardised applications using Cloud Run services, databases, and event brokers, while applying security templates through Gemini Cloud Assist.
Application Design Centre can also support automated provisioning in environments with no human in the loop, allowing policy-governed Terraform configurations to be generated and deployed programmatically, Google said.
Operations focus
On operations, Google said Gemini Cloud Assist can be used with native telemetry to investigate production incidents. Operators can combine logs and metrics, identify likely root causes, and generate remediation suggestions, while infrastructure changes remain subject to human approval and existing IAM permissions, according to the company.
Cost management is another area of focus. Google said machine learning models can analyse seasonal traffic patterns, detect anomalies within minutes, and trigger alerts without automatically shutting down infrastructure.
Reliability features were also part of the update. Cloud Run, which operates as a regional service by default, can be deployed across several regions with a single command, Google said. Service health features can also route traffic automatically to a healthy region if another region becomes unavailable.
Agent push
A large part of the strategy now rests on infrastructure for autonomous AI agents. Google said its Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform includes a dedicated Agent Runtime with serverless and container-based deployment options for enterprise use.
According to Google, the runtime includes session management and memory banks for personalisation, observability based on OpenTelemetry standards, and simulation tools for testing agents across large volumes of interactions and edge cases.
Google is also positioning Cloud Run as an alternative hosting option for customers that want more control or need to meet regulatory requirements. Among the newer features it cited are Cloud Run sandboxes, which place untrusted model-generated code inside isolated environments, and Cloud Run instances, a forthcoming feature for long-running singleton resources with storage mounts.
Governance is another key theme in Google's agent strategy. The company said it offers Agent Identity for non-human IAM with cryptographic identifiers, an Agent Registry for approved agents, skills, and tools, and an Agent Gateway that can proxy traffic, apply Model Armour policies, and block destructive actions.
More broadly, cloud providers are trying to bring application development, operational tooling, and AI deployment into a single environment. For Google, the latest recognition from Gartner gives added visibility to a strategy that increasingly treats agent software as an extension of the cloud-native application stack.
Google also said it remains focused on open-source technologies and pointed to its role as a contributor to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, arguing that enterprises are demanding greater application portability and multi-cloud flexibility.
