Key findings
- Of 362 live channel and partner job adverts at 53 technology vendors and distributors in September 2026, 277 stated a minimum years figure, and the median was five years.
- Of the 362 channel adverts read in September 2026, 185 asked for five years or more, 105 asked for seven or more, and 54 asked for ten or more.
- Just 41 of the 362 channel adverts read in September 2026 were open to a candidate with two years of experience or less.
- None of the 362 channel adverts read in September 2026 asked for more than fifteen years, so the whole channel hiring market sits inside the first fifteen years of a career.
- The 362 channel adverts read in September 2026 used 298 different job titles, and Channel Account Manager alone appeared at 17 employers asking between one and fifteen years.
- Channel marketing asks for more: of 27 channel and partner marketing adverts in the September 2026 sample, 22 stated a years figure, the median was six years, and only two were open to a candidate with two years or less.
- 52 of the 362 channel adverts read in September 2026, spread across 23 employers, made the new hire responsible for driving partner certification.
How many years of experience do channel manager jobs ask for?
Five, more often than any other number. In September 2026 we read 362 live channel and partner adverts at 53 technology vendors and distributors, among them AWS, Cisco, HP, HPE, Salesforce, Palo Alto Networks and TD SYNNEX. The median of the 277 that put a figure on experience is five years.
Barely any will look at a newcomer. Only 30 of the 362 carry an associate or inside title.
That is the wall.
What are the stages of a channel career?
Three, and the adverts draw the lines. We call the span The First Fifteen, because none of the 362 adverts read in September 2026 asks for more than fifteen years. Everything the market pays for happens inside it.
First come the entry years, nought to two. Of the 277 adverts that put a number on experience, 41 sit here, which makes this the hardest stretch of the whole career.
Then the proving years, three to seven. 163 of the 277 sit here. This is where the market buys, and where everyone in the pile has roughly the same years behind them. Knowledge separates them.
Last, the leading years, eight to fifteen, with 73 of the 277, including the 54 that ask for ten or more. Employers at this end expect you to design programmes rather than run accounts.
Does the same job title mean the same thing everywhere?
No. The 362 adverts carry 298 different job titles. Channel Account Manager alone appears at 17 companies, one considering a single year of experience and another wanting fifteen. Qualys ran that same title at two years and at seven.
The five years is a habit, copied from the last advert. It swings by a decade for work with the same name. So the wall has soft spots, and the people who find them can talk about the job rather than the calendar.
Is channel marketing any easier to get into?
It is harder. Of 27 channel and partner marketing adverts in the September 2026 sample, at employers including AWS, Google, Samsung and CrowdStrike, 22 give a years figure. The median is six, 18 of the 22 ask for five or more, and only two will consider someone with two years or less. Partner marketers need the same working language as the channel managers beside them, from joint business plans to through-partner campaigns. None of the 27 adverts asks for a channel marketing qualification.
What does the job involve once you are over the wall?
Often, running a certification programme for other companies. 52 of the 362 adverts, spread across 23 employers, hand the new hire responsibility for driving partner certification: building certified delivery capacity, growing practitioner numbers, taking partners through accreditation. Nobody checks whether the candidate was ever taught any of it.
How do you get over the wall sooner?
Make your knowledge visible before the years arrive. Channel management training will not get you past an automated screen that counts experience. It gives you something to say in the first two minutes of an interview, and something on your CV that is not a date range. It also gives you the language: margin models, programme tiers, partner business planning, conflict rules. Hiring managers notice when someone with three years talks about the channel like the good ones with ten. That is what courses for channel managers and for channel marketers are for.
Eight of the 362 adverts already name a credential they would prefer, among them cloud certificates and sales methodology training. For employers, the cheaper fix is a competence test in place of part of the year count.
The calendar is a poor examiner.
Questions and answers
How much experience do you need for a channel manager or channel marketing job?
Usually five years or more. Of 362 live channel adverts at 53 vendors including AWS, Cisco and Salesforce in September 2026, 185 asked for five years or more and the median was five. Channel marketing adverts in the same sample asked for a median of six. Only 41 of the 362 would consider a candidate with two years or less.
Are there entry level channel manager jobs?
Very few. Just 30 of 362 live channel adverts read in September 2026 carried an associate or inside title, and 41 of the 362 were open to two years of experience or less.
What are the stages of a channel career?
Three, which the Channel Institute calls The First Fifteen. Of the 277 channel adverts that stated a years figure in September 2026, the entry years, nought to two, hold 41. The proving years, three to seven, hold 163 and are where most hiring happens. The leading years, eight to fifteen, hold the remaining 73. None of the 362 adverts asked for more than fifteen years.
How do you move into channel management or channel marketing from another role?
Show channel knowledge rather than channel tenure. Partner economics, programme design, deal registration and channel conflict are what hiring managers test in conversation. With 163 of the 277 channel adverts that stated a figure in September 2026 sitting in the three-to-seven-year band, a candidate who handles those topics credibly at three years competes with people who have twice as many.
About the research
Every advert was read in full from the employer's own careers site in September 2026 and coded against a written rulebook. Engineering, presales, customer success and HR "business partner" roles were excluded, and no employer contributed more than 20 adverts. Where a range was given, the lower figure was recorded. A blind second coder recoded 42 adverts and agreed on all 168 decisions.
The research was carried out by the Channel Institute, which provides channel management training and channel marketing training, with structured, assessed certification for channel managers and channel marketers across the first fifteen years of a channel career, from the first entry level role to running a partner organisation. Its curriculum is guided by an Industry Advisory Council of channel leaders.
